1337 is the name of an English-based internet slang, though having said that there’s no reason I see that it could not be based on any language… Anyway, the digits 1337 look like the letters leet (3 looks like a backwards E), which is short for ‘elite’ — how the few who read and write it think of themselves. Computer Alpha-geeks. And that’s how 1337 works. As many letters and numbers as possible are replaced with other characters that look similar, + or 7 for t, for example.
